The Renaissance city
After 1492 the monarchs rebuilt central Granada as a statement: the cathedral on the site of the main mosque, the Capilla Real beside it as their own burial place, and San Jerónimo and the Cartuja beyond.
⭐ Seen after the Alhambra, these buildings are legible as an argument rather than just as churches. Height, whiteness and light against low, dense, decorated rooms.
What survived underneath
The Bañuelo, the Corral del Carbón and the street plan of the Albaicín are the Muslim city still standing in plain sight, and all three are ordinary buildings rather than monuments — a bath house, an inn, a set of lanes.
Lorca
Federico García Lorca grew up outside Granada and summered at the Huerta de San Vicente. ⚠️ He was murdered near the city in 1936 and his grave has never been found. The city's relationship with him is complicated and worth knowing about before you visit the house.
